Veterans’ Day, organised by Selly Oak MP, Steve McCabe, and Swanshurst School, is now in its seventh year and has become a very successful event. The event saw Veteran’s from WW2 and conflicts after, pass on their stories and experiences to the younger generation. Swanshurst School have built up a brilliant oral history website which documents these stories that they have collected over the years. There were approximately 100 Veterans’ attending, some of whom were transported to and from the school, along with the Veterans’ wives by TOA Taxis. TOA drivers also attended the event in support of the Veterans and their immense efforts during past conflicts. All of the war veterans and their wives who attended are from the Birmingham and West Midlands area.

The day began at 10am when the Veterans arrived, some in TOA cabs. After a few welcome speeches, Veterans marched through the school grounds. This year, the march was led by pipers from the West Midlands Fire Service Pipe Band. The Veterans had a chance to share their experiences of the Second World War and other conflicts with eager students. Before leaving, the Veterans assembled outside for the Last Post and the Reveille to commemorate those killed in the war and subsequent conflicts.

“It was a memorable day and everyone present was filled with admiration for the veterans and their wives. We are proud to have been a part of it and to have been able to transport Birmingham’s war veterans and their families. We hope that today has been beneficial for both the young generation in learning about the immense sacrifices made by these veterans, and for the Veterans in feeling that their struggles are still remembered and honoured today.” Tariq Rashid, Secretary at TOA Taxis.

"Veterans' Day 2014 was a great event, it was fantastic to see our Veterans' share their stories with the students at Swanshurst School, I would like to say a special thank you to our sponsors TOA Taxis, Lockheed Martin UK and Moseley Round Table. Without their generous support Veterans' Day would not be possible." Steve McCabe MP.
